CONCENTRATION OF LEAD IN RIO RIMAC 124% INCREASE IN SEPTEMBER LAST BECOME

Lima, in November. 26 .- The concentration of lead in the Rimac River recorded an alarming increase of 124% last September against the same period of 2006, reported the National Statistics Institute (INEI).

In Environmental Statistics Technical Report - September 2007, prepared with information provided by the Water Service and sewerage in Metropolitan Lima (Sedapal) reported further that the concentration of lead rose to 0.065 milligrams per liter.

The presence of this mineral in high concentrations produce toxic effects on health, especially children, causing delayed development of children, learning disabilities, behavioral disorders, alterations of language and hearing, anemia, recurrent vomiting and abdominal pain.

In the month of study, also detected an increase in other pollutants into the river Rimac as iron (80.8%), cadmium (8.8%), aluminum (96.5%) and nitrate (5.7%) which also produce severe damage to health.
